Frequently Asked Questions
- Why should I hire a professional for my senior portraits?
-
THIS is your senior year, which is a very special time in your life. And while you could probably get a friend or family member to take some photos of you, they simply won’t be able to produce what a professional photographer can.
When you work with a professional photographer, you get to benefit from their years of experience, which includes knowing how to work with natural and studio lighting, where to find the best locations for your shoot, and how to compose a great shot. Not to mention the fact that they’re skilled editors and know exactly how to make you look incredible in every photo.
A professional will also know how to bring your unique style and personality through in each and every image and will be there to guide you on how to pose and smile in order to get the best photos.
A professional photographer is the best person to guide you during the photo selection process too, helping you choose the best shots for printing and your album. Since most photographers have been shooting and printing images for years, they know exactly which paper, canvas sizes and printers to use to get the job done right, giving you beautiful photos that you can display in your home, in an album or on social media.
You only get to be a senior once so don’t miss the chance to capture some great photos of yourself by using a friend or family member instead of a professional for your senior shoot.
- I'm ready to book, what's next?
-
As soon as you are interested in booking a session, shoot me an email or give me a call. We will discuss all the specifics of what you are looking for with your photo session. This will give me the opportunity to learn more about you and what their hobbies are. Since the goal is to capture yourREAL self, each session is unique and customized for you. We will get your date settled and you will pay the $150 session fee at this time.
- How should I prepare for my session?
-
— Be on time. When you arrive late to your appointment, you end up losing out on time in front of the camera. If you will be traveling from out of town, give yourself some extra time for traffic or if you happen to get lost.
— Incorporate your own style. These are photos you’re going to want to look back on so make them your own by being true to you. Read through our wardrobe tips before choosing an outfit but make sure that your overall look is uniquely you.
— Add a few props. Your photos should tell a story so if you play sports or have a hobby that’s important to you, bring in a few props that we can incorporate into your photos.
— Relax and enjoy. We’re here to help you look and feel great so take a breath and enjoy your session.
- How should I do my makeup?
-
Many of my clients often ask us whether it’s necessary to use a professional hair stylist and makeup artist and we highly recommend it.
When you use a professional to help you with your hair and makeup, you’ll not only benefit from their skills and experience but their professional products too. Drug store makeup and hair products will only last so long and we always achieve much better photos when a professional is there to ensure that you look amazing from start to finish.
A professional will also know what works best with your face shape and complexion.
Bonus, doing your own hair and makeup will also be one less thing for you to worry about on the day of the shoot.
If you would still prefer to do your own makeup, I recommend that you apply a heavier layer in order for it to show in the photos. If possible, avoid makeup that contains SPF because it may give shine to your skin. With that being said, you can always opt for a translucent powder to help control the shine. Also remember to keep your mascara looking smooth and not clumpy.
- What should I wear?
-
Before you come through for your session, put a few outfits together that you can bring along on the day. The more varieties you have the better as it gives us more options when selecting backgrounds and putting together looks for your session.
— You will need to change quickly so it helps if your outfits are already organized on hangers when you get to your shoot. Having everything ready to go will also ensure that you get more time in front of the camera.
— Your clothing should flatter your body type otherwise your discomfort will show in your photos. For example, don’t wear a tank top if you’re self-conscious about your arms.
— Mix up the colors and style of clothing that you bring along but try and avoid stripes or busy patterns.
— I also have a small collection of formal dresses for clients to wear. We can look at those if interested.
- How long will our session last?
-
Photo sessions can range from one to two hours. We will meet at the selected location at the scheduled time, go over any special photo requests or needs you have, and then get shooting. We will do lots of different poses, backgrounds, and walk around our location to get new perspectives. I’m happy to accommodate any fun posing ideas you have, or any props you’d like to incorporate. At the end of the session, I’ll answer any last questions and then we’re all finished.
- What happens after our session?
-
Once we’ve captured some great shots, the editing will begin. It takes about two weeks to edit and prepare your gallery. Once I have processed your photos, I will arrange a time to meet with you and your family to show you the photos in a fun slideshow. Once you’ve seen all of the options, I will help you narrow down your selection, measure your walls for any canvas prints or help you choose photos for your album. I’ll present you with the answers people submitted and your child will get see just how much you and other loved ones appreciate her by being able to read what everyone said.
- Do you offer digital files?
-
Yes! Digital files are available for purchase. I also send complimentary files with each print and album purchase. Print prices start at $50.
- How did you get started in photography?
-
I have always enjoyed photography. I began my photography career in high school taking classes and working for a local photography studio. In college, I studied journalism and worked as a newspaper photographer for three years before I switched to running my own photography business.
I loved the energy I felt during my first photojournalism assignment, and I've been chasing that dream ever since. I get the same thrill with each portrait session I capture. For the past 15 years, I’ve been capturing these special moments in northern Utah. I love getting to know my teens and their families. I also enjoy leading photography workshops and mentoring new photographers.
- What makes your style unique?
-
I find that being natural is often better than being over processed. I don’t succumb to every photography fad out there. I want my photos to be timeless, so I have a more natural looking exposure and post-processing than some other photographers. You’ll be able to hold one of my photos in 10 or 20 years and not feel that it’s dated.
